This area gets a lot of sun. The area sees more than 250 sunny days a year, so panels here produce well. The savings question is the part that needs an honest answer.
NV Energy serves Reno through Sierra Pacific Power. The rule that matters is when you applied for solar.
If you applied for rooftop solar before October 1, 2025, your system is still credited on monthly net metering. If you apply on or after that date, the new rule is different. It credits your exported power in 15-minute windows, not monthly. NV Energy itself has estimated this adds about $11 to a solar customer’s monthly bill and stretches the payback period.
This rule is in effect, but it is being challenged in court. The Nevada Attorney General’s Bureau of Consumer Protection and the group Vote Solar both filed cases. An appeal is now headed to the Nevada Supreme Court. We watch the status closely, so we can size your system for the rules that apply on the day you connect.
One point we want to clear up. NV Energy’s new daily demand charge applies to Southern Nevada only. It does not apply in Reno. If a quote mentions a demand charge for your Reno home, that is a red flag.
Permitting runs through the City of Reno, the City of Sparks, or Washoe County, depending on your address. In master-planned areas, an HOA approval is common too. We handle both, so you are not chasing paperwork.
